We are a family with "backyard chickens". In our garden we have a hen house with four Isa Brown hens. In my workroom we have six Light Sussex chicks - one to three days old.
Obviously the chicks were supposed to be in the hen house, but we had to rescue the eggs after my Isa Brown hen turned out to be less than thrilled at the prospect of being a mom (she hacked the first chick to death). So the rest of the eggs were hatched under a heating lamp in my creative workroom.
Getting the new chicks integrated into our flock will probably not work, now that they don't have a mom to help - we will likely have to give the lot away. Thankfully our neighbour is interested so that shouldn't be too hard.
