A good day at work

Some days being a teacher is a real treat. Like when you spend the day at an art museum with your 4th graders to see the Bjørn Wiinblad exhibit:

The museum "Arken" is a beautiful place to visit and it's right by the ocean! The weather was nice so we walked the last bit (about 30 minutes) on our way there. We also went by the beach before heading back to school. Such a lovely day..

Sushi 101

My daughter looooves sushi. And that's why I thought it would be a great idea to make some at home even though she is the only one in our family who will eat it.
For our very first attempt I chose a simple maki roll with cucumber. For one - it is easy. Two - it is her favorite. Three - no fish = less prep time (as fish should be frozen before using it for sushi it is not a good spur of the moment dinner choice)
She had a friend from school over and they had a lot of fun making these.

My son also had a friend over for dinner - so three happy sushi eating kids in all.
We will absolutely make more sushi in the future. Maybe even with fish ;-)

Free crochet patterns

I love to crochet.!
I love finding free crochet patterns!
How about you?

My last link was to a site with no english patterns. To apologize here are some of my other favorite places to scout for free patterns:

The owl is one of many good patterns from Lion Brand (you need to make a free account).
The sun and rain mobile is from Coats Crafts

I also like the e-books from Crochet Me and Knitting Daily. I usually download a copy - just in case - when I see a new one. I would just hate to run out of to-do projects some day ;-)

The company behind the sites is Interweave and you can also find tips on jewelry making, mixed media, painting and drawing, quilting, sewing and weaving.
I get the newsletters - and they are mostly adds - but I also get a ton of inspiration.

Crocheted Converse Baby Booties

I knew when I first spotted the pattern that I HAD to make these. How cute are these crocheted Converse All Star booties?

I have made them in different colors for friends and neighbors. I just wish I had had this pattern when my own kids were baby bootie size.

I'm about to start a new pair for a friend of my nieces - I just have to decide the color. I don't know the sex of the baby yet - so I'm thinking black or red. What do you think is a good unisex color?

"What about the pattern?" you ask. Well, the pattern is free! How 'bout that! You find it at the Järbo garn homepage. Unfortunately it's not in English, but in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, German and Dutch. I always make the stars blue like the real All Stars.

New family members

We are a family with "backyard chickens". In our garden we have a hen house with four Isa Brown hens. In my workroom we have six Light Sussex chicks - one to three days old.

Obviously the chicks were supposed to be in the hen house, but we had to rescue the eggs after my Isa Brown hen turned out to be less than thrilled at the prospect of being a mom (she hacked the first chick to death). So the rest of the eggs were hatched under a heating lamp in my creative workroom.

Getting the new chicks integrated into our flock will probably not work, now that they don't have a mom to help - we will likely have to give the lot away. Thankfully our neighbour is interested so that shouldn't be too hard.

And look at these little cuties:

Amazing artist!

This artist stunned me with her amazing pieces of art. Why? Because they are painted on her face!
Israeli artist Tal Peleg uses her own eyes as canvas for her paintings. I don't know about you - but I'm impressed. I find a simple eyeliner challenging =)
